Let us play through a common scenario...

You're in line at the grocery store, just hoping to get home before nightfall. It was a long day, and you just need toothpaste. You finally reach the checkout line to be greeted by a "friendly" cashier:

  • The Cashier: Hello! Are you ready to checkout?
  • You: Yes, thanks.
  • Is this all you'll be purchasing today? We have peanuts on sale for $0.89 cents!
  • No, thank you, just the toothpaste today.
  • Are you really sure? Act now and I'll throw in this gum for only $0.15 cents!
  • I just need the toothpaste, okay?
  • Sure thing! *beep* That will be $2.14, how will you be paying today?
  • Debit card.
  • The cashier swipes the card you hand them and directs you to that nifty little keypad.
  • Please enter the expiration date and security code on the back of the card.
  • Okay... there you go.
  • Now please fill out your mailing address, weight, eye color, marital status, blood type and favorite Def Leppard song. This is optional, of course.
  • ...
  • Guess it's not! Okay, are you sure you want to buy this toothpaste tonight?
  • Yes, that's all I need, please hurry.
  • No prob! Thank you for your purchase and here's your receipt. While you're still here would you like to sign up for...

By now you've probably crammed the tube of toothpaste down the cashier's throat.

So what's the point?

We've done a lot of commerce online and seen a lot of strange things over the years. Most of all, we've seen website after website approach e-commerce like they just absolutely hate their customers and really don't want them to buy anything.

We personally like the customer and since happy customers = more money, we've created a one-page shopping cart to help.

As online shoppers we deal day-in and day-out with 4, 5, and 6 step shopping checkouts - sometimes more! We register and check our e-mail... click the link and verify the name of our first teacher... then have to do it all over again to login just to verify that yes, we aren't pretending that we want to buy a product.

It's insanity! And it's a polluted effort. The great thing is, with a one-step cart it makes it a lot easier to qualify if a customer dropped out because of another issue such as price or shipping. We still collect all of the pertinent data your organization needs, and we still pull off an effective form of cross-selling, but without all the silliness.
